Use your permanent markers to color in your designs, making sure to leave a small border around the edges. Start by cutting out your desired shapes from the Shrinky Dink plastic using scissors or a die-cutting machine. Additionally, be sure to allow the markers to dry completely before cutting out and shrinking your designs to prevent smudging. These markers provide smooth, consistent coverage and are ideal for blending colors to create intricate designs.
– Yes, colored pencils can be used to create designs on the Shrinky Dinks. This is my little secret to keep the shapes from curling up and sticking to themselves. This makes it possible to color with colored pencils on the shrink film.
- Remember that the shrinking process will distort your design slightly, so don’t worry too much about making it perfect.
- Your kids can create their own custom ornaments for the tree, or they can start creating some for relatives or friends to give as gifts.
- For this project I’m making a key chain but check out some other ideas of things you can create at the bottom of the post!
- Try making themed jewelry like state or country pendants.

The important note if making a keychain is using a hole puncher BEFORE the melting happens so you can then thread a string around a keychain ring. This makes this project a fun recycled craft for kids! Read more below on all the details to make this adorable Valentine’s Day craft with kids! The hard little plastic shapes and characters that are so fun to make as keychains or charms?
Nothing can look more beautiful and hold more worth than a handmade piece of jewelry. If you’re making it on Mother’s Day, you can make regular handprints or spell out the word MOM with a handprint. Choose from different designs, such as heart-shaped or monster-name keychains, and personalize them with funny sayings. You don’t need to stock up on expensive supplies to create shrinky dink necklaces; you can use materials that are already there in your craft bin.
DIY Shrinky Dinks:
For this project, I recommend the frosted type of Shrinky Dinks; this allows your students to use colored pencils on the plastic. Yes, you can print images on this plastic film meant to be used on an inkjet printer. Super skinny or small details may not work well because they can curl and stick when melting.
LIMITED TIME OFFER FOR NEW USERS
It’s not super strong, and is pretty much gone within minutes after you’re done baking. I also found some actual Shrinky Dinks at Dollar Tree back in the toy department by the crafts for kids. I’m new to this shrinky dink fun, ordered some sheets but can’t wait to get started! Are you sure you’re using #6? I feel that kids nowadays should have more hands on fun with things. They should shrink at the same rate if you bake them in the same batch, so just size your images similarly on the computer before printing them.
Whenever you wear them, people will appreciate your art and compliment you for wearing jewelry uniquely designed for you. Once your shrink dinks design is ready, you will have to glue a rare earth magnet onto its back to turn it into a shrinky dink magnet. While baking, the shrinky dinks switch on the oven lights so that your kids can watch their art transforming into tiny treasures.
Notes
This post was SOOOOOO helpful and I keep coming back to it to refresh my memory. I would do one test with 3-5 different sizes and once you find one the size you like then you’re good to replicate based on the test. But hopefully this helps (and I love the idea of to do list reminders on o rings for kids!)
Every Christmas I try to make a craft with my kids to give to family. I’m a follower of Jesus, a mom to 4 kids, a kitchen mess-maker extraordinaire and a person who thrives in Chaos. Charm bracelets, necklaces, magnets, jewelry, hair clips, rings, or even zipper pulls. Here are a few fun shrinky dink ideas https://shrinky-dink.com/ you can make with your kids.
Shrink Art, (also know as shrinkies or shrinky dinks) is a fantastic arty activity for kids. If you love our Shrinky Sheets, who not check out our huge range of other Arts and Crafts, as well as Sand Art and Plaster Painting Packs. The hole will also shrink to a perfect size.
It works best if you outline it in black after, so if you’re doing this with a group, make sure to get a few extra blacks. It can be hard to see what you’re coloring as you do it, but the colors get much stronger when you shrink it. If you’re on a budget, this pack from Ohuhu is a strong choice. I decided to stop the shrinking short to allow the petals to curl a bit. But if you’re just looking for a fun, playful craft that virtually anyone can do, I have your back! These are NOT the realistic-looking single petal flowers, so I apologize in advance, if that’s what you’re after, this isn’t the right post for you.
